Manny Mathuthu says: The Surname MATHUTHU is predominant in Zimbabwe and South Africa. One has to understand that African Surnames in Zimbabwe's Ndebele tribe (Formerly Zulu from South Africa who migrated with King Mzilikazi to Zimbabwe) are derived from Animals. Examples are Nkomo (Cow), Nyanthi (Buffalo), Ndlovu (Elephant), Sibanda (Lion), Ngwenya (Crocodile), Juba (Dove), Nyoni (Bird) etc. Similarly, the Surname MATHUTHU is derived from the African Kangaroo (which is the size of a family dog), has pocket for its kids, hoops around and is characterized by digging tunnels underground which it uses when escaping from Predators like wild or domestic dogs. The soils from these tunnels are heaped on the outside in small quantities. These small soil heaps are called AMADUDU (in Ndebele) and MATUTU (in Shona). One must also remember that NDEBELE is not a Tribal name. The real Tribe for these people (us) is ZULU. We were named NDEBELE by the local tribes in Zimbabwe when King Mzilikazi was invading from South Africa. His people never stayed in one place. They always wandered about (relocated). So the locals called them Ndebele (meaning Wanderer). So in Ndebele (or real ZULU) MATHUTHU should be called MAYELANE (the name of the African Kangaroo - just like NKOMO). Oh! more importantly, the MATHUTHU Tribe were very highly respected in the King's Kingdom. They were the King's Messengers. Mind you a King had a large domain. His messenger was sent to another King for agreements and treaties (to use today's language). The MATHUTHU Men were like today's Ambassadors to a country. For that the MATHUTHU families were considered as part of the Royal family. They stayed within the Palace but not in the King's Chambers. Hence the Subjects Honored and Revered this MAYELANE TRIBE. Hope somebody will add more accurate information to this.
